Saskia Venegas: Ortzadar Sugea
- Monday 20 May 15:00 - 15:20 (Lindenbergzaal)
The Rainbow Serpent is considered one of the most powerful ancestral creatures in Australia.
The story tells that the earth was flat a long time ago. The snake was one of the Dreamtime creatures who possessed great powers and shaped the earth. The movement of her body formed hills, gorges, creeks and rivers in the once featureless terrain of our Earth. The serpent slithered across the land, taking in waterholes and supplying nourishing water. When she grew tired of creating the earth, she retreated to a pool of water where she remains to this day.
Ortzadar Sugea is a composition for flute, bass clarinet, didgeridoo, percussion and electronics, written by Saskia Venegas and performed by Ensemble Oihua. The piece will be played in one movement traveling through several stages, starting with a meditative textural passage that transitions into a lively rhythmic section, which is abruptly replaced by an ethereal passage and then organically flows into minimalist trance-like and stirring patterns.
Composer, violinist and music theater maker Saskia Venegas Aernouts started a development process at Music Meeting this year. Over the next two years she will work intensively on her artistic and business development, under the wings of the festival. In addition to the necessary lessons, study, coaching and working visits, she also makes two new productions during this period. She will present this and other new work at Music Meeting.
Ortzadar Sugea will have its world premiere on May 20 in the Lindenberg during Music Meeting 2024.
