Ana Carla Maza
Adventurous cellist on a musical tour of South America
Varied influences
Listening to Ana Carla Maza is like travelling around South America. In her solo shows on the cello, she reveals a whole range of influences, from the traditional music of her youth to the bossa nova, habanera and beyond. She also boasts a formidable technique that encompasses percussive rhythmic playing, agile mastery of the bow and calmly passionate vocals.
Early student
Carla was born in Cuba as the daughter of the Chilean pianist and composer Carlos Maza and the Cuban guitarist Mirza Sierra, and she started to learn the cello at the age of eight. In 2007 the family moved to Spain from where, still a teenager, she toured all over Europe as a soloist with the Mediterranean Symphony Orchestra and her father.
After she moved to Paris in 2012 to study at the conservatory of the Sorbonne, her solo career blossomed in collaboration with the cello maestro Vincent Ségal and rock star Jean Louis Aubert. But she has also completed a number of commissions for film soundtracks. On Bahía, her third solo album, she continues her musical tour of South America, with influences from not only the Cuban son but also the tango, samba, bossa nova, jazz and even the classical French chanson.
