Son Bent Braam
Swinging on latin alphabet
Like a well-oiled machine
“Throw a party!” That was the idea behind this project from pianist and composer Michiel Braam. Although the leader himself plays the keyboards, brass and percussion predominate. The three percussionists entice you straight into the world of Latin, with hot-blooded and flourishing rhythms in various styles such as mambo, rumba, son, danzón and boogaloo, beaten by hand on a row of congas or with the skilful use of drumsticks on the timbales. Right behind the rhythm section, the brass players line up in battle array. Reed and copper combine to create both passionate melanges and sharp riffs and breaks.
Musical intellect
Under the name El XYZ de Son Bent Braam, the group works its way in an hour through almost the entire Latin alphabet, from the B of Bienestar (joy) all the way to the Z of Zafio (pork rind). On paper that might sound like an intellectual exercise, but if you experience it live you’ll have difficulty keeping your feet still.
