Fuensanta

Exemplary lack of inhibition 

You could compare the music of the Mexican double bassist and singer Fuensanta to the girlfriend who suddenly appears before you, with lots of plans and not much luggage, and convinces you there and then to head off with her. It’s the music of someone who gives it absolutely everything, without any reservations. Fuensanta's contagious energy and exemplary lack of inhibition might be the first qualities to strike you, but they are certainly not the only ones.

Musical colour and contrast 

A notable feature is how her compositions retain their power and distinctive feel in the most varied line-ups. Her rhythms are just as compelling and her melodies just as catchy in a trio with bass, vocals and guitar and some keyboards and percussion, as they are in a larger band, such as her eleven-strong Ensamble Grande. It was for this ensemble that Méndez composed her new work at the invitation of Music Meeting, and it demonstrates her deft skill with arrangements. The colourful lines drawn by sax and trumpet offer a rich contrast with the voices of the four singers and Fuensanta herself, which play off one another so effectively.

Her bass playing, as relaxed as it is efficient, performs the role of guide in this wonderfully pure music whose destination nobody knows, but everybody clearly wants to be on the trip.
