MM Concerts: Jamie Peet New Trio
What a fantastically elegant drummer he is, Jamie Peet. Elegant in the sense that you first think he plays just like other drummers. But listen closely and you hear that is seldom the case. Peet always plays it a bit differently, subtly shifting the emphasis, and then those breaks of his that are really different. No matter what Peet does, he never loses sight of the groove.
Typical of his generation, his jazz rhythms are increasingly influenced by hip-hop beats, which only make them swing all the more, and of course Peet has developed his own style. For one of his three concerts at Music Meeting, he invited two musicians who are every bit a match for him. The first is Danish bass player Peter Eldh, an upcoming key figure in progressive European jazz. A musician who, like Peet, likes to dictate the pace. The second is Dutch guitarist Reinier Baas, another musician with a unique rhythmic approach.
