Music MeetUp - Aflevering 1: What does change mean to you?
One of the many perks of going on tour is the opportunity for artists to discover new cultures. Local music and art, but also different languages, customs and traditions. Touring can also make the most mundane act of eating into a memorable experience. A big part of travelling the world happens whil...Music MeetUp - Episode 5: Delights
Spending many hours in transit, running low on proper sleep and choosing means of travel and accommodation based on budget, not many artists have ever been in a position to travel first class for five hours sitting next to the passenger of their dreams. But sometimes, it’s nice to just let our...Music MeetUp - Episode 6: Home
How do you maintain a sense of home when you’re on the road? Musicians go where the music takes them. It can be hard to feel at home when you change cities every day, moving from hotel room to hotel room. But little traditions might help some artists with settling into a new place. Music Meeti...Music Meeting Exposed: Jamie Peet
Dynamic drum parts resound over the almost empty beach of Egmond aan Zee. It is a remarkable meeting of the inner peace of nature, symbolized by the vast stretches of sand and the driving sounds of the percussion. Powerful as the waves of the North Sea. Strolling through the dunes, Dutch drummer Jamie Peet finds peace here in his turbulent life as a musician. Music Meeting visited Peet on the beach and in the musical venue Music Center Blue in Alkmaar. An expedition into timbres and acoustics Jamie talks about how his father, bass player Michael Peet, inspired him to become a professional musician. When hearing Elvin Jones drum on John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme', Peet was completely overwhelmed by the energy of his drumming. To make his inspirations his own, Peet prefers to immerse himself in an album and then translate this into his hands. This process manifests itself in a journey of discovery towards the ultimate timbres and acoustics.Watch back: Marja Mortensson and Daniel Herskedal live at the Festivalhuis
Last summer, VPRO recorded several Vrije Geluiden Sessies in the Festivalhuis with artists from Music Meeting 2023. The session by Marja Mortensson and Daniel Herskedal can now be watched back on our website. This remarkable music comes from Norway. Except, Marja Mortensson does not sing in Norwegian but in the language of her people, the Sami. Or, to be precise, the almost extinct Åarjelsaemien Gïele or South Sami, spoken today by just five hundred people. For she believes that she can only truly express herself emotionally in that language. Unlike colleagues such as Wimme Saari, she doesn’t opt for wordless joik, in which the voice mimics natural sounds, but instead sings songs about subjects such as reindeer calves and their mothers, and about traditional customs. Herskedal, her accompanist and partner in life, is both a composer and a virtuoso player of the tuba and bass trumpet with a background in impro and jazz. And you can hear that in the music of this remarkable duo who, although deeply rooted in an ancient tradition, still sound very contemporary.Music Meeting X Kunstnacht 2023

Everything is in motion. Movement gives our lives a certain unpredictability, but it also creates freedom. According to interdisciplinary artist Jamika Ajalon, this is the ideal breeding ground for magic. Music Meeting followed the American Jamika Ajalon on her ongoing journey.MM Exposed - Behind the scenes with Jamie Peet
Dynamic drums reverberate over the almost empty beach of Egmond aan Zee. It is a remarkable convergence of the inner peace of nature, symbolized by the vast stretches of sand and the driving sounds of the percussion. Powerful as the waves of the North Sea. Strolling through the dunes, Dutch drummer Jamie Peet finds peace in his turbulent life as a musician.MM Exposed - Behind the scenes with Emine Bostancı: Dareyn Quartet
The melancholic and expressive sounds of the kemenche can be heard from music venue Splendor in the heart of Amsterdam. It is here where Music Meeting visited musician and composer Emine Bostancı for a glimps behind the scenes at her Dareyn Quartet rehearsal.MM Concerts: Emine Bostancı with Dareyn Quartet
Emine Bostancı, virtuoso player of the Turkish kemenche (knee velvet) and artist-in-residence at Music Meeting 2023, is founder and lynchpin of the extraordinary Dareyn Quartet. She has mastered ancient Ottoman court music to perfection, but is equally at home in Turkish folk music. Cellist Maya Fridman had been around for some time, but recently Dareyn grew into a quartet with Franz von Chossy on piano and Vinsent Planjer on percussion. Characteristic of Dareyn's music is the lyrical and often melancholic sound of intertwining melody lines from kemenche and cello that, framed by carefully dosed keyboard playing and percussion, intertwine East and West. Relive their incredible performance at Music Meeting 2023 with this video registration.MM Concerts: Jamika & The Argonauts
Jamika Ajalon combines in her voice the sultry sound of Grace Jones, the passion of Betty Davis and the determined fearlessness of Patti Smith. The music of Jamika & the Argonauts is no less eclectic. They can easily switch genres even within a single song, with slow trip-hop suddenly giving way to hard rock, rap turning into vocals or vice versa, or the swinging guitar riff abruptly acquiring an aggressive edge as though, out of nowhere, Talking Heads are replaced by Killing Joke. No matter what happens, every song features a lively groove, and thanks to the devotion with which Jamika Ajalon utters every line, every word even, the motley medley of genres still sounds cohesive. On top of that her French band also has something to say. About reclaiming the narrative, for example. The group conveys the political narrative with such conviction and verve that the audience is sure to chant it with them. Haar zinderende debuutalbum, The River Doesn’t Like Strangers, verscheen in 2021.
