MORDÁI
Hungarian folk music played with refreshing intensity
While the numbers played by the Hungarian band Mordái are traditional, their music definitely isn’t. Inspired by the experimental and innovative folk of the 1960s and 1970s, these six Hungarian musicians give their music an innovative twist. That leads to moments when you think you’re listening to a metal band. Such ferocity is typical of this ensemble, with raw guitar and blaring saxophone solos, and especially the great intensity with which singer Soma Nové imbues the lyrics with life. Mordái likes to celebrate the outsiders, those who don’t vanish into the crowd. That’s why you can hear a melancholic undertone in the music and songs of this group, yet one that is also very much alive, with the power needed to stand out. The big asset is the dynamism of this band. They achieve intensity and ferocity by taking their time and slowly raising the tension. Moreover, the volume often remains low and the tempo calm, only for it to suddenly explode. Even then, the fine melodies, which acquire extra depth from the combination of guitar, saxophone and viola, retain all their force.
