With her high notes, she will get you surely quiet. Belgian singer ADJA has a voice soaked in soul. She can take it in many directions. One moment she sounds almost laconic when she sings about a past relationship, for instance, but the next moment you feel her pain and sorrow in all its depth. Self-conscious and powerful, she is not afraid to show her vulnerability. On her recently released ep Ironeye, the Brussels-based singer mostly opts for a sober accompaniment: a guitar, trumpet, a bit of percussion. This gives her impressive voice and the wide range of emotions she expresses exactly the space they deserve. The courage to drop silences adds emphasis to the personal lyrics. You can hear that every tone, every word is serious. But that is not the whole story. ADJA's often hip-hop-like soul is at the same time sultry and sensual. Being allowed to be there, to be who you are, that is the core of this inspired music.
