ESINAM & Sibusile Xaba
Transformation as a mantra
Brussels-based Ghanaian-Belgian multi-talent ESINAM began her stormy career in the capital dance scene as a one-woman orchestra, framing her hot-blooded and glowing vocals with samples, field recordings and loops of herself on flute, keys and percussion. Entirely in the spirit of Music Meeting, ESINAM creates a musical weave that cunningly connects influences from house, trip and hip-hop with the African music of her ancestors, blues and psychedelica. An important key to her work is found in the first sentence of the prologue to her latest project Shapes in Twilights of Infinity: 'nothing is lost, nothing is created; everything is transformation.' Of all the influences ESINAM takes in, not one escapes that transformation process unscathed. South African singer and guitarist Sibulili Xaba is an ideal musical travelling companion in that respect, if only for the way he respectfully but thoroughly took the traditional music from his own native region in hand and brought it up to date.
