MM Concerts: Colectiva
Feisty grooves, uniting the best of the rich Latin tradition, topped with a generous helping of jazz. Welcome to the world of COLECTIVA, the British band made up exclusively of female musicians who, with plenty of power and passion, fuse Afro-Latin with jazz to produce what they like to call hot tropical jazz. Fiery music it certainly is, with drums and percussion creating a rhythm that is as subtle as it is compelling. Layered on all that, the brass section (saxophone, flute, trumpet and trombone) adds an equally swinging and exhilarating ingredient. Fully reflecting the group’s name, it’s the collective as a whole that really impresses; nobody is the boss here, nobody tries to steal the show. Nevertheless, there’s plenty to enjoy, musically speaking, for those who don’t feel like dancing. For example, there’s the striking role of the violin, which makes the sound all that more atmospheric and emphasizes its subtlety. COLECTIVA knows how to make a swinging dance party, but there are also so many layers to their cleverly composed songs. This band plays with heart and soul, throwing lots of humour into the mix too.
