Tolyqyn meets K.O. Brass
Special project guarantees magic
The whole world in a quartet
The most exciting things occur when unexpected combinations and styles encounter one another. For instance, the clash of styles, influences and cultures between Tolyqyn and K.O. Brass. Created exclusively for Music Meeting, this project pits Tolyqyn, a super trio from Berlin, against the brass players of K.O. Brass. Tolyqyn made an immediate impression with their untitled debut album in 2020, in which they link Afro-Cuban rhythms to Nigerian high-life rhythms and the sounds of the kora, alternating them with more Western genres such as traditional folk and groovy jazz. Live shows take them down side-roads. That’s an excellent reason to explore those avenues together with K.O. Brass from Amsterdam: four brass players from four different countries, each with their own background. The result? The whole world comes together in the quartet.
An adventurous challenge
That means a fresh cocktail of influences, styles and approaches. So no surprise that they like to cross swords with countless other artists who defy genres. They include Typhoon, Kyteman and Wende Snijders, not to mention Slagwerk Den Haag, Orkater and Leo Blokhuis & Ricky Koole’s New Orleans theatre concert. K.O. Brass also convinces on its own, as shown by their debut album Keyo. Music Meeting now brings Tolyqyn and K.O. Brass together with the aim of challenging each other, drawing on their varied backgrounds, and letting them rise above themselves. That’s how magic happens.
