Naima Joris 2021
A voice to drown in
Foregrounded
Naima Joris, the daughter of Belgian jazz musician Chris Joris, has been singing for some time, though mostly as a backing vocalist. It was actually by chance that she found her true voice – a deep alto – by singing Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell at home in the living room. That made her father Chris immediately sit up and listen.
While mourning for her sister Saskia, who passed away three years ago, Naima also discovered her songwriting skills, and the effect was heart-wrenching. A serious bout of stage fright meant that we might never have heard of her, but then came the lockdown. Naima decided to film the covers she often sang at home and posted them on her Facebook page. Her languid, restrained yet highly penetrating renditions proved hugely popular, and a year ago they led to a first solo concert and record contract.
Intoxicating and passionate voice
Since then she has plucked up the courage to perform more often with her own band, in which she plays not only piano and guitar but also soprano sax. Clever arrangements offer the band members ample opportunity to shine, but it’s mainly Naima’s intoxicating and passionate voice that grabs our attention.
