Ghassen Chiba & Will Guthrie

You will not easily forget the voice of the Tunisian/Australian singer Ghassen Chiba. He can sing beautifully quietly, as if he entrusts something important to you only. But he also sings exuberantly and with dedication at times. Packed with emotion, especially in the characteristic yodel he sometimes uses, but it never becomes sentimental - let alone kitsch.

Chiba shares the stage with Australian drummer Will Guthrie, another man who brings extremes together on percussion. Guthrie is masterful at compelling, mesmerizing beats that slowly but surely bring you into a trance, but he can rage like an unhinged free jazz drummer. With North African music as a basis, this pair brings out the best in each other. Whether Chiba plays percussion or the hallucinatory shruti box: the music of this duo is blood-curdlingly exciting.
