Jazz with Afro-Caribbean influences
You can safely call singer/songwriter Izaline Calister the ambassador of Curaçao. Since her beautiful debut album Soño di un muhé from 2000, Calister has combined traditional music from her native island with jazz and Afro-Caribbean influences like no other.
The charismatic singer impresses her audience with songs sung in Papiamentu. Sometimes subdued, sometimes exciting. Her albums have been released worldwide. For Speransa, Calister received the Edison in the World Music category in 2009. Izaline performs throughout Europe, the United States and South America. She also played at major festivals in Mexico, Indonesia and South Africa. In 2018, Calister was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
With Tula Leeft! Calister pays tribute to the national hero and leader of the largest uprising against slavery in Curaçao: Tula. Calister takes you to the Curaçao of the past through music, stories, archive documents and film fragments.
