Despite his status as an internationally acclaimed musician, Derya Türkan does not cut a striking figure. Indeed, he’s almost as inconspicuous as the instrument he plays. Anyone unfamiliar with the kemençe will not suspect that this compact, three-string Turkish instrument can produce such penetrating sounds. Türkan himself is calmness personified when he plays. He lets his instrument speak for him, whether he’s just improvising or performing classical Ottoman or Turkish compositions.
Musical ambassador
Positions with the Istanbul National Turkish Music Ensemble and the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation enabled Türkan to act as a musical ambassador. The ease with which Türkan collaborates with fellow musicians at home and abroad makes him a welcome guest on stages across Europe and America. Over the course of his career he has appeared alongside with such celebrated musicians as Alaeddin Yavasca, Erol Deran and Sokratis Sinopoulos. Derya Türkan keeps a musical tradition alive and well with his performances, albums and workshops.
