Images come naturally. The French-Syrian flutist Naïssam Jalal has composed for film, among other things, and you can hear that in the thoughtful way she builds atmosphere with her band. Every sound is given the appropriate space and duration. And a color—a color that lends depth to the music. Surrounded by a group of stellar musicians, Jalal soars to great heights on her most recent album, Quest of the Invisible. It’s so beautiful how she allows everything its time, letting the musicians—individually or collectively—calmly tell their story. Without forcing, without rushing. The result is expansive music, music best experienced with your eyes closed, to see and hear how the sounds—such as those of her worldly ney and flute—become images. To see and hear what those images say.
