Ingoma Yesintu -Song of Humanity or Folk Song in isiZulu- is led by bassist-composer Zenzele Mthembu-Salter, who writes and arranges the music for this a cappella ensemble, with a strong focus on voices. With subtlety and finesse, six singers, double bass and percussion interweave several vocal harmonies with South African grooves and rhythms. The choir consists of talented vocalists from around the world such as Portugal, Spain, India and Korea, affiliated with the local Conservatory of Music. They draw their inspiration from African gospel choirs, classical chorales, traditional songs, jazz and free improvisation. These influences can be heard in the music that produces a richly layered, and multicultural mosaic.
This concert is made possible in part by Space is the Place.
Space is the Place, from Amsterdam, creates space for both emerging and established musicians in a world where electronics blend with acoustics, jazz meets contemporary, and dance invites introspection-all driven by a shared passion for music in the moment. By doing so, they support artists locally and beyond, encouraging them to cross disciplines, experiment with new collaborations, and take creative risks on stage.
