An impressive image: three women, each surrounded by a set of percussion, completely absorbed in their concentration and listening intensely to each other. The instruments being played are traditional, and the basis of this music, the driving force behind it, the very thing that carries the listener along, is also traditional. But the music itself, with that compelling beat, the layered rhythmic structures, that music itself is brand new. Very exciting, too, especially. Not only when it is exhilarating, but also, and certainly not least, when it is hushed and subdued.
