The six musicians and a dancer make up Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, the longest surviving Italian folk music ensemble. Beautifully raw harmonies, compelling rhythms and the hallucinatory sounds of the violin, the Italian bagpipes and the diatonic accordion, among others. With an energy that immediately leaps out at the listener, the group manages to keep time-honored traditions alive. You hear at once how deeply rooted this music is and how fresh.
That Conzoniere Crecanico Salentino's gaze is most certainly not only backward-looking is evidenced, for example, by a recent collaboration with dance artist DJ Morph. When you hear how the tambourines and other percussion instruments swing in the hands of CCS, that's not a crazy move. No, dancer Silvia Perrone will certainly not be the only one dancing at Music Meeting.
