TRIO DA KALI & NORTH SEA STRING QUARTET | ON TOUR, SEE LIST BELOW
Trio Da Kali from Mali can rightly be called a super group. For singer Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté is none other than the daughter and musical heir to Kassé Mady Diabaté, one of the biggest voices ever to come out of Africa. Mamadou Kouyaté is the son of Bassekou Kouyaté, founder of the successful N’goni ba, and Lassana Diabaté knows no equal on his instrument. True, all too often such pre-assembled line-ups of musicians prove to be one-hit wonders. But some chefs know how to mix ingredients, and the British producer Lucy Duran, who composed the group, has a track record in lasting taste sensations. They include Songhai, a project in which griot music and flamenco blend automatically to form an irresistable melange.
She repeated that achievement by bringing Trio Da Kali together with the Kronos Quartet, an exciting combination that proved popular everywhere. The Americans then went their separate ways, but they were kind enough to release the arrangements so that the Malinese musicians could use them when teaming up with others, an honour now falling to the North Sea String Quartet. And that sounds promising, for besides classical skills these young stars possess a number of qualities that Kronos could only dream of: swing, groove and the ability to improvise.
LENINE & MARTIN FONDSE 'The Bridge II' | NOV 19 @ LUX, NIJMEGEN
In 2013, Music Meeting presented the remarkable collaboration between Lenine and the Martin Fondse Orchestra. Over his three-decade career, Lenine, a world star from Brazil with thirteen albums and numerous Latin Grammys to his name, has had his songs covered by the likes of Maria Bethânia, Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento. With The Bridge, which sees the singer-songwriter team up with the Dutch pianist and composer Martin Fondse, he has added another fine chapter to his imposing body of work. A reference to the Ponte Maurício de Nassau in the Brazilian capital of Recife, The Bridge combines exciting new arrangements by the celebrated composer Fondse with compositions by Lenine.
Eight years after their successful collaboration, Lenine and Martin Fondse are teaming up again. The legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter and the celebrated composer and pianist go back to basics. The Bridge II comprises familiar classics and more recent compositions in a pared-down form that showcases the beauty of music.
ALFREDO RODRÍGUEZ TRIO + ALAIN PÉREZ QUINTETO (double feature) | NOV 21 @ LUX, NIJMEGEN
For summer vibes this autumn, the place to be is LUX! On 21 November, Music Meeting Concerts is presenting a special Cuban Sunday with not one but two performances. Alain Pérez Quinteto and Alfredo Rodríguez Trio offer a foretaste of Music Meeting 2022, the central thread of which will be Cuba. Pianist Rodríguez has a sublime technique. His visible pleasure while playing is contagious, giving you the feeling that you’re right beside him at the piano. A true hero in Latin America, Pérez rarely performs in the Netherlands. But he will bring this day to a close with his quintet, before returning for Music Meeting 2022 with his entire salsa line-up. One not to miss!
MOHAMMAD MOTAMEDI & REMBRANDT TRIO | DEC 17 @ LUX, NIJMEGEN
Mohammad Motamedi and the Rembrandt Trio play sensitive music at the intersection of genres and cultures. | Fortepiano, violone and whisper set do not belong to the standard range of instruments, certainly not in world music and jazz, but the musicians of the Rembrandt Trio create a remarkable group sound with them. The trio achieves an optimal playing and listening experience in every project and collaboration. Their work with Kayhan Kalhor, the kamancheh player from Iran, and with fellow Iranian Hossein Alizadeh, who plays the shurangiz (similar to a lute), were sublime. On this occasion they are sharing the stage with the Iranian singer Mohammad Motamedi. A vocalist who, just like the trio, feels at home in various styles and genres but, above all, is a singer with a striking sound.
