Trio Da Kali & Ragazze Quartet

African super trio powered by Dutch strings

Quirky beats on the balaphone and graceful plucks of the n’goni strings form a familiar West African nest for Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté’s mighty voice. But when the string quartet starts playing, the whole soundscape shifts. Melodic lines from various musical worlds interweave in unexpected manners. To call Trio Da Kali a ‘super band’ is an understatement. Singer Hawa is the daughter of the late Kassé Mady Diabaté, one of the undisputed great voices of the African continent. And Mamadou Kouyaté, who plays the bass lute, comes from N’goni Ba, the famous family ensemble of his father Bassekou. Lassana Diabaté is not only an unbelievable virtuoso on the balaphone, his solos also unequivocally reflects his love for jazz. He is the vital link that connects the parts of this exciting partnership. On this occasion, the Dutch Ragazze Quartet will do the honours and play arrangements specially composed for this project by the American colleagues of Kronos.
